A critical catalyst and a reflection of our current state of attention.

the film

‘NOISE, an ode to anxiety’, looks to represent our behavior on social media interaction, a chaotic edit driven by the kinetic energy of our mental state on this fast moving social engineered experiment, this film serves as a critical catalyst and a reflection of our current state of attention.

This is experimental project I developed somewhere in 2023, exploring cymatics and how it can resemble the information flux of social media.
Hugely inspired by the work of Susi Sie and my social media feed which was one of my main references on creating this short film.

My main tool was Blender, using particle systems and geometry nodes setups to impulse the motion.

Using Audio to drive this animation was a crucial part of it, editing was the final touch.

AN ODE TO ANXIETY
In the perpetual expanding void of the digital age, where absurdism reigns supreme and anxiety lurks in the shadows, society finds itself grappling with existential crisis and primal needs. The pervasive influence of interaction-based algorithms silently shapes our perception of self, leading to a disconcerting reflection of modern society.
The relentless exposition of stimuli in the digital realm acts as a catalyst for anxiety, as we navigate a sea of information overload. Social media platforms, the epitome of repetitiveness, serve as virtual stages where curated identities perform for validation as a daily ritual. In this environment, anxiety thrives, fueled by the pressure to conform to societal norms and the FOMO on the latest trends.
The transition from philosophical inquiry to hedonistic indulgence marks a pivotal shift in individual values, prioritizing instant gratification over introspection. This shift not only perpetuates the disconnect between human desire for meaning and the universe's inherent meaninglessness, but also intensifies feelings of anxiety. The constant pursuit of hedonistic pleasures as a temporary escape from the existential void only serves to deepen the sense of unease and the slow pulse of losing self-identity.
On top of that, the power wielded by algorithms in the digital age exacerbates this chaotic feeling, subtly pushing individuals towards fulfilling primal desires and perpetuating a cycle of consumption. Social media algorithms, in particular, fragment the sense of self by promoting curated identities that conform to mainstream ideals. In this fragmented landscape, anxiety thrives, as individuals struggle to reconcile their authentic selves with the personas they present online.
However, amidst the chaos of the digital realm lies the potential for empowerment and resilience. Turkle advocates for the creation of independent spaces on the web, where individuals can foster free expression and intellectual exchange. By cultivating digital mindfulness and resisting the homogenizing effects of social media algorithms, individuals can reclaim autonomy and assert their unique identities. This act of self-affirmation is crucial in navigating the digital abyss and preserving individuality amidst the chaos of modernity.
In an era of digital garbage, what are you feeding yourself with?, what are you feeding them with?.
